JULIAN AND SANDY REBORN

One of our exhibition themes is about POLARI, the "secret" gay language made famous by Julian and Sandy (Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Williams) on the 1960s radio show "Round the Horne".

Someone made the foolish suggestion that we should write a new "Julian and Sandy" sketch. We have ... and because it's intended for our next exhibition, we've called it  "TATE BONA".  To hear (at your own risk) click HERE

LGBT HISTORY MONTH 2010

In Nottingham we had the following for LGBT History Month 2010:

  • Lots of mini displays in places like libraries and civic centres, including some new places which we didn't use in 2009
  • A talk by author Narvel Annable about his new novel and about gay life in 1960s Derby and Nottingham
  • 4 performances of "The Gay Man's Guide" at the Lace Market Theatre + a talk-back evening when there will be a discussion about the play
  • Our annual LGBT History Pub Quiz
  • Tony Bilton's Gay History Tours
  • A small publication based on some of the newspaper cuttings we have gathered
  • Another Exhibition of resources and materials developed and gathered by Nottinghamshire's Rainbow Heritage

The exhibition was held in the Studio at Broadway Cinema from Tuesday Feb. 23rd to Sunday Feb.28th.

This year's novelty was that we previewed the exhibition on Tuesday February 16th in the Ballroom at the Council House. 145 people turned up, ate all the food and had. a good time while the following things happened:

  • We presented awards to 3 local organisations/people/groups which have benefited the local LGBT Community. They were Nottingham Hyking Dykes, Healthy Gay Nottingham and Breakout Gay Men;s Group.
  • We presented the first two Michael Raymond memorial awards. These are for groups, venues, organisations and individuals who are no longer with us and this year they were Lesbian Line and the Pavilion Club.
  • We showed a video of the Nottingham Pride march and the Famous Faces Powerpoint sequence.

Thanks go to the Sheriff of Nottingham for presenting the awards, the Deputy Lieutenant of the County for acting as Master of Ceremonies and to Debbie Law for providing some wine - once again.

TRAINING, PRESENTATIONS ETC

NRH's resources have been fundamental to 10 training sessions for the whole of the staff of Nottinghamshire Connexions; for a workshop on homophobic bullying for Nottingham schools; for an LGB Awareness session for Nottingham CVS and a workshop on Homophobia for East Midlands Open University.

NRH's "Proud to be Gay" LGB Awareness training sessions were oversubscribed and received excellent evaluations.

We will also be involved in providing training/presentations for Rushcliffe Council, Newark and Sherwood Council, Waterloo Housing and Trent University.

TRAINING ON LGB AWARENESS

We are doing a repeat (by popular demand!) of our "Proud to be gay" training. It will take place at Arnold Library on May 6th from 9.30-4.00. Here's what they said about our last training day ....

"Really enjoyed the day!" "More to it than I expected, thank you." "Training was well delivered, thank you." "Really interesting and informative, but fun as well - which training often isn't." "Enjoyed the day." "Very well led and informative - good size and diverse group." "Kept me interested, safe discussions, good training day." "Most enjoyable, friendly tutors." "Excellent." "Enjoyable." "Trainers were excellent at what they do." "Was a very good day, managed, timed and planned well; the information given was useful and interesting and the trainers had good knowledge of all aspects and shared it well." "Really positive, supportive environment created." "You have both been fantastic." "Brilliant, would recommend to others."

WHAT'S NEW ON THE WEBSITE

A very large number of the materials we have produced (display panels, leaflets, a book and more) have been converted to pdf files and uploaded on to the website so that you can view them and download them yourself. Most are in the NRH's Resources section.

A couple of people who came across the website have e-mailed us more photos of Part Two Club.  To see the whole slideshow, click HERE

An audio clip has been added which comments on having to contact Notts Police about harassment. Go to Our Heritage/People talking/Talking about this and that or just click HERE

Shirley Macredie, a member of Nottinghamshire's Rainbow Heritage, visited Sydney's Mardi Gras earlier this year.  You can see a slide show of the event either by going to the slideshows in NRH's Resources, or just by clicking HERE.

A page has been added about the "ASDA Kiss-in".  Click HERE to see it.

Mo and Joan have added some photos of their Civil Partnership day to our slideshow - go to NRH's Resources and click on Slideshows.

There's now a page devoted to Sapphist Writers. You can find it by going to the Social groups section under "Our Heritage" or under "General Index". There's also a link to their blog on the "Links" page.
