WHAT'S NEW ON THE WEBSITE

Several issues of "I'm Free" can now be downloaded.

Most issues of Gay East Midlands can now be downloaded.

In both cases, go to NRH's Resources - magazines and newsletters.

Information about the Sir Charles Napier pub has arrived.  Go to General Index or to the Bars and Clubs section off Our Heritage.

Under "Local social groups" you will find information about LIRAIN - lesbians into real ale in Nottingham.

The new QB (no. 45 December/January) can now be downloaded from the Home page

There is now a direct link to downloadable documents on the General Index page.

The highly industrious Tony Bilton is developing a Nottingham Queer Calendar. You can see it as a slide show by clicking  HERE

This is a prototype. It shows some venues which have since closed. The final version will have some changes. The slide show will take you away from this website and you will need to re-enter our URL to return here.

 LGBT HISTORY MONTH 2009

Plans are already well underway for LGBT History Month 2009.  The highlight will again be a huge exhibition at the View from the Top Gallery above Waterstone's bookshop.  This will start with an evening launch party on Tuesday February 17th - 7.00 to 9.00 pm. (free food and drink!!). Some of the themes used last year will return, but often in expanded form, for example there will be much more on:

  • local LGBT venues
  • local LGBT publications
  • LGBT people from BME communities
  • homophobic bullying

New themes will include:

  • Section 28
  • A trans theme
  • Civil partnerships
  • What the papers said
  • Dorothy the badge lady
  • Out of their trees - Notts LGBT related family trees
  • Gone, but not forgotten
  • Nottingham CHE
  • I am part of
  • The Prize Quiz - you can find all the answers amongst the displays

Once more, we will provide a questionnaire for you to add your comments, opinions and suggestions.  One of last year's suggestions in the "what would you like to see in future exhibtion" section was ... "a nice cup of tea". So, during those times when the exhibition is staffed, you can have a (free) cup of tea or coffee and also have a chat with one of our volunteers.

We expect to project slide shows of some of the photos we have acquired and also allow people to surf a projection of this website.

Nottingham County Council are arranging an LGBT Consultation event and have scheduled it for the Sillitoe Room at View from the Top on February 20th.

Displays are also being organised: so far they have been scheduled for:

  • Nottingham Council House
  • Arnold Library
  • Angel Row Library
  • Rushcliffe Borough Council
  • Radcliffe on Trent Library
  • Newark Library
  • Newark Civic Centre
  • Mansfield Civic Centre
  • Mansfield Museum
  • West Bridgford Library
  • Beeston Library
  • Sneinton Library
  • St Anns Library
  • Broxtowe Civic Centre
  • Nottingham Register Office

At View from the Top and at the various displays, you will be able to pick up a copy of "Nottingham in the News", a 4 page newsletter detailing what the letters page of Nottingham Evening Post printed about major LGBT events in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. This will be printed by Nottingham City Council.

There will be the 4th Annual LGBT History Quiz at the Lord Roberts.

Tony Bilton will be organising one of his Gay History Tours

By pleasant coincidence there are two relevant events at local theatres:

The Lace Market Theatre are putting on Oscar Wilde's "Lady Windermere's Fan"

and Les ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo are appearing at Nottingham Playhouse.

NRH is planning two training sessions to be held at the end of November. These will be LGB awareness sessions. They will use the resources of NRH to illustrate examples of discrimination and how things have changed. Part of the day's focus will be on the needs of young LGBT people and therefore the courses will be particularly relevant to teachers and youth workers.

The dates for these sessions are Tuesday November 25th (at Ashfield Women's Centre) and Wednesday November 26th (at Arnold Library). Places are filling up fast.

As these sessions are part of NRH's overall project and are supported from the Heritage Lottery Fund's grant which will therefore bear most of the cost - the cost to you will be only £10..

The courses will be publicised through various channels, but please feel welcome to e-mail us via this website if you are interested.

September 1st. Barry Holland has loaned us a lot of photos from the inside of La Chic club (1973-7). You can see them as a slide show by going to La Chic in the bars and clubs section or the NRH's Resources section.

There'll be more about 2008's Nottingham Pride Festival, but first of all .... here are the responses NRH got to its question "Where is the most unusual place you've had sex?"

Under the stars in a field ....Buxton, on top of the Blue John mine .... Up a tree .... Up the same tree ..... In the hot room at Roko Gym ......On the roof of the Victoria Centre ... The Manager's Office at Lloyds (it has CCTV) .....Against a bookcase in the Bodleian Library ....At the back of a Barton's bus .....Through the railings at Great Portland Street Hospital ....Manager's Office Burger King ....Middle of a field in a stone circle ....On the back of a horse when it was trotting ...Chatsworth House graveyard

2 people went along on July 19th to represent NRH at the Co-op's Celebrating Cooperation day at the University of Nottingham.  The full title was "A celebration of cooperation, International Development and Diversity".

To demonstrate the complexity of "diversity" we put on a display about Black and Asian LGBT people - which was certainly the display which got the most attention.

The LGBT group at North Notts College have been doing a lot of work on anti-homophobic bullying.  Look at their YouTube video by clicking on the yellow box.

Nottinghamshire's Rainbow Heritage was launched successfully during 2008's LGBT History Month.

As well as the big 6-day exhibition at View from the Top (click HERE to see it), the project also arranged

  • An LGBT History Quiz at the Lord Roberts
  • An illustrated talk on CHE in the 1970s
  • A two week display at Central Library
  • A one week display at the Council House
  • Displays at Mansfield CVS, Bassetlaw CVS and Ashfield Women's Centre
  • Contributions to LGBT HIstory Month events organised by Castle College, the Open University and Nottinghamshire Police

Our recent big event was our presence at Nottingham Pride on Saturday July 26th. We had a marquee people could:

  • See some of our displays
  • Meet Dorothy - our mannequin who has dozens of LGBT-themed badges covering her Nottingham City Council Civil Partnership T-shirt.
  • Donate their image - 36 people let us take their photos
  • Get some literature which describes what we are doing and how you can help
  • Give their opinions on various issues (serious and silly) by sticking a post-it note on one of our boards
  • Give us a mini audio-recorded comment - there's a comment from one of the Pride Committee in the People Talking ... about This and That section
  • Pick up a badge and a keyring

Here's one of our image "donors"            ...............   but my favourite thing was the

                                                                                           giant dancing squirrel
